Charge for the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) ORU Advisory Committee
The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to advise and provide key information to the SCIPP Director in relation to the operations, development, and growth of the Organized Research Unit.
The Advisory Committee may provide technical expertise and serve as an independent sounding board in determining important activities. The Advisory Committee may also contribute to the mission of SCIPP by ensuring effective program planning and enhancing the ORU’s public standing.
Membership: The Advisory Committee will include faculty, ideally from at least two divisions at UCSC, whose aim is to advance SCIPP’s research, and it will include at least one member of the research staff. The Advisory Committee leadership will consist of a Chair (typically the Associate Director) and a Secretary (typically the Assistant Director for Administration and Finance).
- Meet in committee at least twice per year at the call of the Chair and in consultation with the SCIPP Director.
- Encourage interdisciplinary faculty and graduate student participation in SCIPP activities and promote close articulation of SCIPP’s programs with teaching departments and centers, institutes and ORUs in related fields.
- Based on SCIPP’s annual report, provide a brief addendum report of the ORU health: research relevance, culture, and budget.
- Provide a perspective on SCIPP’s intellectual contribution to UCSC’s research enterprise, to be included in the unit’s 5-year and 15-year reviews.
PERIOD OF SERVICE:
Advisory Committee members, other than the Chair, serve for a two-year term, which may be renewed. If a committee member resigns, the Advisory Committee Chair and SCIPP Director should be notified as soon as possible so that a replacement can be appointed.
RESPONSIBILITY OF SCIPP ORU ADVISORY COMMITTEE CHAIR:
The Chair is responsible for overseeing the activities of the committee and consulting with the SCIPP Director on the committee’s behalf.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF SCIPP DIRECTOR IN RELATION TO THE SCIPP ORU ADVISORY COMMITTEE:
The director will nominate Advisory Committee members that consist of faculty from across divisions and areas of interest. The director will report membership and Chair updates, meet with the Advisory Committee on a regular basis, and seek advice from the Advisory Committee on emergent issues.
The Advisory Committee offers advice and makes recommendations to the SCIPP Director as a committee. The Chair of the Advisory Committee will determine when individual recommendations are appropriate.
